​From Big Screens to Small Screens: Will OTT Platforms Replace Movie Theaters?​

Watching video content, specifically movies, on any kind of digital platform or device is a personal experience. It can vary from person to person, hence making it a subjective choice rather than a collective activity. OTT (Over The Top) platforms are one such internet-based streaming service for digital content projection that does not require a traditional cable connection or satellite. It has been rising through the late 1990s and 2000s, with the introduction of iTV and later Netflix at a global level. 

Following that, there are many OTT Platforms like BIGflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+Hotstar, now JIO Hotstar, Zee5, Sony Live, MX Player, and Eros Now. Even though OTT platforms are gaining popularity and being praised for providing flexible viewing, it is naive to assume that theater projections will be affected. There has been a lot of debate on OTT vs Movie theaters. Many assume that with convenient digital content viewing apps, there is no need to run on a specific schedule of a Movie theater.  I have seen many times people standing outside the theater and complaining that there is not a single movie they want to see that is screening, yet they go ahead and book a ticket, so how can it be assumed that digital platforms would affect the large screening halls? Let’s try to compare both to find their pros and cons.

Home Streaming Vs Movie Theater Screening: OTT platforms provide varied content from movies, reality shows, and series; with a monthly or yearly subscription, you have access to a wide range of content, so much so that you won't be able to consume it completely. This is not the case with Theaters, they have limited content that is being viewed on the big screen, mostly the mass movies that are widely recognized or are newly released. Some prefer to watch movies in a theater, but for a person like me who wants a variety of content in my space, I turn to OTT platforms most of the time.

Even so, OTT platforms replacing movie theaters would not be a reality, at least anytime soon, as the experience of large screen visuals cannot be replaced with viewing on a mobile or TV screen. So the debate on Streaming vs. Screening and which is more effective, well, the truth is it is all about personal preference. It is something that cannot be concluded from one angle; it depends on various factors, and it would evolve depending on viewers' liking, availability, readiness to spend, evolving technology, convenience, etc. 

An individual who is inclined to enjoy a big screen experience of art would not prefer the same on mobile or TV screens. It's not about OTT Platform vs Theater or what range of content is available, but it's about what a person enjoys at the end of the day. • Is it a movie by my favorite star or a highly acclaimed film? Come on, if it's a highly awaited movie from your side, don’t doubt, just go to the Theater, even if the movie is highly acclaimed on technical, visual, musical, ot storytelling aspects, your answer is the Theater

• Am I looking for a casual watch or a specific genre? An OTT Platform would be best for casual watching on weekends or weekdays, even if there is a specific genre, well, not necessarily it can be available in a theater, so an OTT Platform is best
